And Tyson never took it. The course was dropped about two years before he got there. Today you push a button, and the telescope does the calculation. Nobody calls him less of an astrophysicist for it.

The exchange does not prove that every old procedure should survive. It does something more useful: it leaves the tradeoff open. A machine can remove labor we no longer need, and the same labor may have been building a form of noticing we did not know how to name.
